Terri Coleman Among her many state and national accolades for School Counseling, Mrs. Coleman has ushered in nearly a decade of amazing service for her students at Brocks Gap and Trace Crossings Schools through the YouthServe Changemaker Program, which she carefully curated for her younger students. |
Community Partner of the Year:
Jera Stribling For nearly 30 years, Jera Stribling served as Executive Director of the Joseph S. Bruno Charitable Foundation and as such, created the program for youth philanthropy that would become the YouthServe Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC). At the time of her retirement in 2022, YPC had hosted nearly 500 youth in the program, serving over 30,000 hours exploring community challenges, meeting them through grantmaking, investing over half a million dollars into the Birmingham metro community. |
Creative Service Award: Homewood High School Clean Air Collaborative
An engineering class at Homewood High School worked together to help improve ventilation in their school community during the pandemic, when good ventilation was a top priority. The class, led by their teacher Mr. Helf, designed and created air filtration systems out of ordinary HVAC filters and box fans, which they distributed to Homewood Middle School, as well as other classrooms within their school system. Lead students include Luke Binet, Bennett Dearing, Brooks Denson, Cohen Galloway, Harrison Hensarling, Savvy Scott, RJ Teter, Hudson Winslet. Advocacy & Awareness Award: The Simone Project, Carrington Hodge
Carrington Hodge (JCIB) began her journey with a group project in the YouthServe Youth Action Council during the difficult first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. She and her team began to put together virtual learning resources for youth to learn about minority histories and religions not traditionally covered in school. Carrington was so moved by the process, she continued the project, building a website to offer resources to youth and adults alike, the world over. Overall Impact Award: R4 Recycling Club, GW Carver High School
This incredible project began with a YouthServe Changemaker Program years ago and continued through their teacher, Rebecca Blumenfeld, which led to two wins at the Altec STEM Innovation Challenge, new water chillers for their school, reusable water bottles for the student body and now, a recycling program the students brought back to their school and manage themselves. An incredible impact not only for their school, but for their community, their city, and their planet. Lead students include Alexsandra Cardoza Barragan, Jessica Garcia Cruz, Jayla Franklin, Yonna Hale, Robert Hutton, Angel Martinez Moreno, Tamia Moreno, Tamia Motley, Gustavo Garcia-Perez, Brenda Rivera.
